The Standard
Study 2013/2
Correlation between instrument section and classification accuracy. Conducted by a national member organisation without the participation of the Association.
The Association has not endorsed this study, has not withdrawn it, and does not distribute it. It is reproduced here because it continues to be requested. Enquiries are referred to the organisation that conducted it, which no longer exists.
Findings
| Section | n | Correct |
|---|---|---|
| E♭ Horn | 41 | 94% |
| Euphonium | 38 | 88% |
| Baritone | 29 | 84% |
| Cornet | 96 | 71% |
| Trumpet | 87 | 62% |
| Trombone | 54 | 41% |
The Association draws no conclusion from these figures and asks not to be asked to.
Reception
The study has been cited on four occasions. In each case the citing party played the E♭ Horn.
A follow-up was proposed in 2015 and abandoned. The two sections most affected by the 2013 findings declined to participate, jointly, in a letter of nine pages which the Association has not published and does not intend to.
Nothing in this study bears on admission to examination. No instrument confers advantage. The Examination Board has twice been asked whether the E♭ Horn constitutes an exception, and has twice confirmed that it does.
The trombone figure has been checked twice at the request of the section concerned and stands.
